[English] 비례식 묘사 / 표현

우리가 일상에서 비례식을 통한 표현을 사용하는 경우가 많다. 예를 들면 다음과 같다.

~수록 좋아

많을수록 좋아
The more the better

시간이 이를수록 좋아
The earlier/soonner the better

가까울수록 좋아
The closer the better

작을수록 좋아
The smaller the better

쉬울수록 좋아
The easier the better

위 문장을 보면 완성된 문장이 아닌데, 이는 하나의 숙어처럼 이해하면 된다.
참고로 as soon as possible은 “최대한 일찍“이라는 표현이라 위의 표현과는 다르다.
그렇다면 마지막에 ~좋아가 아닌 다른 표현을 쓸 때는 어떨까?

작을수록 가격이 더 싸져
The smaller it is the cheaper it is (gets)

작을 수록 가격이 더 비싸져
The smaller it is the more expensive it is (gets)

작을 수록 더 편리해져
The smaller it is the more convenient it is (gets)

위 문장을 보면 better과 다르게 cheaper는 it is가 필요해 축약을 못 시키는 것을 볼 수 있다. (영어에서 자연스럽게 쓰는 방식이라고 한다.)

많을수록 ~

많을수록 좋아
The more the better

기능이 많을수록 좋아
The more functions it has (there are) the btter it is

작을수록 비싸
The smaller it is the more expensive it is.

확장하는 경우

작을수록 들고 다니기가 더 편해져
The smaller it is the more convenient it is to carry (around).

작을수록 들고 다니기가 더 쉬워져
The smaller it is the easier it is to carry (around).

작을수록 들고 다니기가 더 쉬워져, 근데 그렇다고 해서 꼭 작을수록 좋은것만은 아니야
The smaller it is the easier it is to carry (around), but that doesn’t necessarily mean the smaller the better.

왜냐면 작을수록 안에 넣고 다닐 수 있는게 적어지니까
Because the smaller it is the less stuff you can carry in it.
