[English] even if / even though

even if

“~을 할 수 있다 하더라도” 라는 의미를 표현하기 위해서 “even if”를 쓰면 된다.
even if + I could 형태로 자주 사용된다.

Example

이번주에 비가 온다 하더라도 우리는 나가서 운동 할꺼야.
Even if it rains this weekend, we’re going to go out and excercise.

솔직히 말해서 나는 직장에서 5분 거리에 살 수 있다 하더라도, 작고 낡은 아파트에서 살고 싶진 않거든요.
Honestly, even if I could live just 5 minutes away from my workplace, I don’t want to live in a small and crappy apartment.

솔직히 말해서 나는 운전해서 회사에 갈 수 있다 하더라도, 대중교통을 타고 출근하고 싶어.
Honestly speaking, even if I could drive to my office, I want to commute using public transportation.

even though

even if와 다른점은 이미 일어난 사실에 대해서 이야기 하는 경우는 even though를 사용한다. 해석은 “~을 했는대도” 로 할 수 있다.

Example

어제 비가 왔는대도 걔네들은 운동을 했어.
Even though it rained yesterday, they went out and exercised.

연습 예제

나는 근무시간이 길지는 않은데 돈은 많이 못받아
I don’t work very long hours but I don’t make a lot of money.

적은 급여로 지내는게 물론 쉽지는 않은데 내 시간이 많다는 점이 좋아
It’s certainly not easy living on such a small salary but I really like the fact that I have a lot of time for myself.

솔직히 말해서 돈을 아주 많이 벌 수 있다다 하더라도 내 모든 시간을 일하는 데에만 보내고 싶지 않거든
Honestly, even if I could make a lot of money, I don’t want to spend all my time working.

차라리 돈 적게 받으면서 내가 하고 싶은걸 할 시간을 갖고 싶어
I’d rather earn little and have time to do what I want.
