[Compiler] GCC Compiler

GCC compiler는 가장 많이 사용되는 compiler 중 하나다. C language code가 실행파일까지 만들어지는 과정을 아래 그림처럼 확인 할 수 있다.

실제 gcc 컴파일러를 통해 중간에 수행되는 과정 전체를 보려면 아래 옵션을 통해 볼 수 있다.

1. Pre-process

전처리 과정으로, header file들이 내부 코드가 복사되고, define 구문이 실제 선언된 값으로 변환되는 과정이다.

gcc verbose option (-v)를 통해서 로그를 보면 실제 컴파일러는 cc1이다.

2. Compile

우리가 일반적으로 ‘컴파일’이라는 단어가 의미하는 진짜 의미는 C언어와 같은 high-level source code를 assembly code로 변환하는 과정을 뜻하고, 실행파일까지 만드는 과정은 build라고 해야 맞는 말이다.

gcc의 로그에서 compile 과정의 로그는 아래와 같다.

3. Assemble

사람이 읽을 수 있는 assembly code를 object code (a.o) 로 변환하는 과정이다. Object code는 실행이 가능한 것은 아니고 relocatable file이다. 실제 수행하기 위해선 우리의 코드 뿐만 아니라, 각종 library 코드도 함께 필요하다.

Assembler로 as가 쓰이는 것을 볼 수 있다.

4. Link

최종적으로 object file들을 하나의 실행가능 파일로 변환하는 과정이다. gcc에선 collect2 라는 프로그램을 통해 다른 library object들을 함께 linking 한다.
